Spinal Stenosis- Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment & Cost

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal nerves run through openings in the vertebrae which is protected by surrounding bones & tissues. Spinal Stenosis is a condition which is caused by narrowing of spinal canal. Stenosis refers to a narrowing or stricture of a duct or passageway. This cause pressure on spinal cords and neves of backbone. In majority cases, stenosis occurs in lower spinal area i.e. lumbar spine.  This narrowing occurs with spinal stenosis can also affect spinal cord causing severe pain.

What are Causes of Spinal Stenosis?

There are many different factors that cause spinal stenosis.

1.  Aging is considered as the prime cause of spinal stenosis. Changes to the size or shape of the spinal canal occur due to aging that leads to spinal stenosis.

2.  Arthritis is another major cause that affect spine badly. The inflammation caused due to Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis  also contribute to spinal stenosis.

3. Accidents & Injuries can cause fractures or dislocate spine resulting into spinal stenosis.

What Are the Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis?

When spine gets narrow, it starts putting pressure on spinal cord and nerves causing severe pain and discomfort. Stenosis is somewhat similar to disc herniation, howevere stenosis is chronic and a progress slowly. Those who suffer from cervical stenosis may suffer from extreme pain that feels somewhat similar to electric shock.

Spinal stenosis may also cause numbness, weakness, burning sensations, tingling and "pins and needles" in the arms. Those who have stenosis in back can also feel pain in buttocks, thigh or leg and they usually feel difficulty in activities like walking and standing.

Diagnosis of Spinal Stenosis

Complete diagnosis of a patient can be done after examining their body and after checking their medical history. Some tests like X-rays and MRI scans are performed to confirm the diagnosis.

A physical exam is also done to check the sensation, weakness or any numbness in spine.
